Remains of the Day was formed by Andy Loflin, Alex Quaranta and Cliff Sutton in September 2001. The original lineup released a self-titled EP followed by the home recorded album "Blend Into Backgrounds" in 2002.
Matthew Poeta joined in 2002 followed shortly after by Chad Mullinax. The lineup recorded and released Remains of the Day's first studio album "Taking Form" in 2003 while playing shows around South Carolina.
Rusty Lindsey joined in early 2004 followed by Jeremy Long. The band released the live album and concert film "Stone Avenue" in 2004 while performing throughout the year in South Carolina, Georgia and North Carolina.
I still remember when Chad auditioned for us at my parent's house in Liberty, SC. He came in with this thick knit beanie on and proceeded to beat the hell out of his drum set as we ran through our songs. He was a very different drummer than Cliff and it changed the band. Around March of 2003 we began recording at a studio in Clemson, SC with producer Keith Welchel. We recorded throughout the year and finally received a CD from Keith in early December with the words "ROTD Studio Master" written in sharpie. The last thing he told me was "Now you still need to get this mastered". We never did get it mastered, instead we just burned copies as fast as we could.
On December 20, 2003 we had a CD release party at the house in Liberty. From what I remember of the night, we played songs from the new album and smashed a toy guitar at the end of the set. It was Alex's last performance with the band before returning home to Italy. We changed again with the new year and copies of "Taking Form" made their way to each new show. Some were sold, most were given away, Remains of the Day changed and we moved on.
The band played its last show on January 22, 2005 at The Handlebar in Greenville, SC. I had already moved to Charlotte, NC and all of my boxes of stuff from the band had made the move with me. Then we moved again in 2006 and years later, two more times in 2021, finally to our new home in Troutman, NC; twenty years after Cliff, Alex and myself formed Remains of the Day. I set up the new studio upstairs and eventually started to unpack all the boxes, sorting through the years of things I had collected while playing music. Posters and photos, cassette tapes and videos from shows and then that CD from Keith, "ROTD Studio Master", and his voice came back to me "...you still need to get this mastered". So that is what I did.
I ripped the songs from that original disc and started working on making them shine again with new technology. The result is a master that I find to be more present and the true intended sound of "Taking Form". Now we can actually hear Matthew playing the sitar on "Eight Minutes from the Sun". The layered crunch of Alex's electric guitar build a wall around Chad's toms in the opening track "Move Me". It's the same "Taking Form" from twenty years ago, but it feels new. All those memories in boxes, saved and moved around, are now here for us all to rediscover.
